Vex EDR is a year-round competition for  middle school and high school aged youth and designed for our most competitive and experienced youth. VARC youth design and build a robot out of metal hardware to do certain tasks in a game format; last year’s competition was launching balls into a net and lifting your alliance team's robot. To compete in Vex, youth must purchase new VEX hardware annually to replenish any metal they have cut during the season and invest in hardware to learn new design methods.  VEX hosts local events, a state championship, a national (US Open), and international competition (VEX Worlds). Part of  the competition involves running  robots autonomously (no human interaction) which require the youth to program them.

TEAMS form in May annually and the club has 2 teams this year. Only very-experienced middle school youth will be allowed to join these teams due to the cost to field a team (hardware), the club's work space, and the difficulty to design with metals versus an easy, snap-together platform such as VEX IQ. Middle school youth will be expected to compete on a VEX IQ team their first year.

The 2017-2018 game is In the Zone  and an explanation of the game can be found  below.
The Game:

VEX Robotics Competition In the Zone is played on a 12’x12’ square field configured as seen above. Two alliances – one “red” and one “blue” – composed of two teams each, compete in matches consisting of a fifteen second autonomous period followed by one minute and forty-five seconds of driver-controlled play.

The object of the game is to attain a higher score than the opposing alliance by stacking cones on goals, by scoring mobile goals in goal zones, by having the highest stacks, and by parking robots.
